The existing house in Northcote is a single fronted weatherboard Edwardian set in a row of similar design houses. The proposal seeks to improve the functionality and liveability of the existing dwelling, allowing the growing family to remain inner city. The site is a short walk from High Street, close to the shops and bus, train and trams stops are close by. We have made a direct connection between the living area and the back yard allowing the home to be opened up to the northern light and benefit from the solar gain. The proposal is site responsive and is designed to respect the character and heritage values of the area. The upper level extension is setback from the street boundary and is designed to be visually recessive. The contemporary design of the extension adopts the same roof angle as the original house. The use of a dark colour and following the roof line silhouettes the original, reinforcing the prominence of the heritage facade within the existing pattern of the street. Materials and colour have been selected to distinguish the new from old, so that the extension is a true representation of its timeline rather than an attempt at reproduction.
