The site is located at 45 Little Baillie Street, North Melbourne and has a lot area of 115m2. It is located in a predominantly industrial street with operating businesses located on all sides. There is a mechanic next door on the west side, and a recording studio on the east side. We propose a new residence that will add vitality and activate the street and reinforce the injection of life into the area.
The proposed building is industrial in aesthetic which reflects the nature of Little Baillie Street and surrounding streets. The buildings either side are single storey brick buildings with garage doors and minimum windows. The new building will recognize their height and parapet shape (tiered) on both sides through the carefully designed shape of the screen. Whilst creating a more pedestrian friendly entry with composed views to both inside and from inside out.
The building has a two layered skin, one is the container for the inside providing shelter, the other (the screen), provides privacy and an opportunity for a vertical garden to soften the otherwise hard edge.
Through various means the proposed building is punctured with light, including northern light from a void space
