Gertrude Street

The brief given to us by our client was to convert a heritage warehouse into usable office, studio space and the base build (warm shell) for a gym fit out. The original building housed a furniture company and had various occupants following this.

Functional requirements to make the building fit for purpose included a lift, accessible and ambulant toilet and shower facilities, and integration of acoustic and fire solutions. The original heritage listed shell was stripped back and renovated, and the new insertions were kept minimal.
The new amenities ‘box’ was clad in the floorboards that were removed from the same area, which show markings of its original life as a well tread floor with paint splatters and dents. New ceilings and walls in plaster were painted black in order to regress while sending the original timber trusses and floors forward visually. The street frontage has remained the same, with the addition of a new glass door and side panel opening up to the buildings new main foyer.
